In The Dark and Sound Fields Listening Event
In The Dark and Sound Fields are hosting a listening event on the eve of the festival at the Black Iris Social Club in Virginia.
The storied, the one, the only Talia Augustidis be playing audio pieces which blur the boundary between fact and fiction, inspired by this year’s RESONATE theme: Docu-fiction.
You can expect chats with dead hamsters, consolations of future selves, some hard truths and softer lies… Plus it will be a fun way to get excited about the festival.
Plus, @SEXYBABEWET, a piece written by my lovely friend Savannah Spatafora and produced by yours truly, will be playing!
For those who don't know, In The Dark is an audio collective that holds gathered listening events for the public. Their aim is to create a mini-revolution in the way we think about spoken-word and creative audio by lifting it out of its traditional settings and celebrating it in new and unusual ways. In 14 years they’ve held over 250 events across the UK and worldwide, in cities like Belfast, Brussels, Lisbon, Berlin, New York and Melbourne.

Like speed dating for audio journalists and producers, Podcast PitchFest puts you in a virtual room with more than a dozen podcasting industry leaders and gatekeepers — including representatives from This American Life, Radiolab, CBC, Wondery, Radiotopia, Frequency Podcast Network and more.
Selected applicants will be provided with a handbook containing specific interests, mandates, and submission guidelines from the participating shows and networks. Participants will also receive pitching training on Friday, November 1 (2:45pm – 4:30pm PST) from Mia Lobel, veteran audio producer and the former VP of Content and Production at Pushkin Industries, who will teach you how to turn your idea or story into an effective, attention-grabbing podcast pitch that will make commissioning networks and shows take notice.
Then, on Thursday, November 14 (12pm – 5pm EST), it’s pitch time! Selected applicants will rotate through breakout rooms with executive producers and network reps, each giving you 25 minutes to wow them with stories or to simply learn more about what they’re specifically looking for from future pitches. Participants will also take part in a guided “greenroom” conversation in between pitching sessions with industry experts.
Interested the Nov. 1 workshop but can’t commit to PitchFest? Podcast Development & Pitching Workshop with Mia Lobel is open to all!
Registration for this workshop is free, but donations are encouraged, with proceeds going to support Audio Flux, a home for independent audio, new voices, and innovative ideas in podcasting.

Event: Will the Real Young Voters Please Stand Up?
Moderated by Christian Paz, Senior Politics Reporter, Vox
Young millennial and Gen Z voters could be a mighty force in the 2024 presidential election, with Gen Z alone accounting for over 40 million potential voters. It’s no wonder both major political parties are attempting to mobilize this group, half of whom don’t identify as Democrats or Republicans. But turnout among young voters has always been low, and their trust in institutions, officials, and the media is in decline. Can viral trends and funny TikToks incentivize young people to flock to the ballot box? How do these voters swipe through a constant barrage of information, and pause to consider what matters to them? What do they really want to hear from candidates?
A panel of civically engaged Gen Zers and young millennials from across the political spectrum visit Zócalo to stand up and speak for themselves: progressive political digital media specialist Annie Wu Henry, youth civic engagement advocate Ava Mateo, and former Iowa State representative Joe Mitchell.
Don’t miss out on voter engagement activities hosted by Cal State LA’s Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs before and after the conversation.

Event: 花園distance, rincs, Plu, Improv Ensemble with Patrick Shiroishi and more
Formed in 2009, this three-piece instrumental band consists of:
Keyboards: 岡田ぴサス (Okada Pisus)
Bass and Synthesizer: かじ (Kaji)
Drums: ミ兵chi (Hamachi)
The band fearlessly combines rhythms and phrases derived from the diverse tastes and sensibilities of its three members, creating a delicate balance of sounds that may or may not fit together.
They intentionally aim for this precarious equilibrium.
The pastoral piano melodies evoke a sense of familiarity reminiscent of fairy tales. In contrast, the psychedelic, swirling bass and synthesizer sounds rebel against this peace.
Meanwhile, the tricky drumming rolls up and down the staff, seemingly invading the melody lines.
This year marks their 15th anniversary, and they are releasing their third album, "Juugo" (Fifteen).

Class: Editing for Editors
The role of an editor is a tricky balance, helping shape a story that ultimately belongs to someone else. It is a job that requires both story skills and people skills, knowing both how to structure a story and how to guide a reporter.
In this class, we will work through both sides of the editor equation. We’ll talk in-depth about the elements of a good story, common mistakes reporters make in reporting and crafting stories, and practical tools for fixing those mistakes. And we’ll dive into the human side of editing, tips and tools for assessing the individual needs of your reporters, and how to best support and motivate them.
The class will be very practical, using examples from instructor Karen Duffin’s experience helping edit stories at Planet Money and This American Life, along with series like Wild Boys. We will also leave time to talk through any editing dilemmas you’re currently facing. If you have taken Karen’s Story Structure class, some of the material may be familiar though will be addressed from a different angle.
Bonus: Registration comes with a free, three-month license for Hindenburg audio editing software!
This class is for you if you're either new to editing or if you have a little experience under your belt and are looking for more tools to diagnose and fix story problems.
